The mineral Zinc plays a important role in supporting our immune function as well as assisting in many cellular functions and numerous enzymatic functions. Zinc is an essential part of healthy hormone and immune molecule development and therefore human growth. Unfortunately, deficiencies are very common globally with an estimated 1/4 of the worlds population deficient. Over 400 thousand deaths annually are contributed to by a Zinc deficiency. Zinc is most important for pregnant women and growing children because it helps with cognitive development as well as regulating Leptin, IGF-1 (insulin-like growth factor-1), Cortisol and other hormones.
Tomatoes. Tomatoes (Solanum Lycopersicum) are fresh, succulent fruits that boast of having many culinary roles. Be it salads, sauces or drinks, it introduces the health-boosting benefit of lycopene. A carotenoid pigment, lycopene is a phytochemical also endowed with the shielding benefit of antioxidants.
Herbal Teas. Herbal teas commonly infuse the aromatherapeutic benefits of anti-aging herbs like Turmeric, Ginseng, Gotu kola, Oregano and Resveratrol. The majority of these healing herbs contain strong antioxidants that extend the prolonged lifespan of skin cells. These herbal extracts that make up aromatic teas serve to also calm the body and the mind.
Bone Broth. The recipe of bone broth soup is not merely for a mouth-watering eating experience, but also for a beauty-enhancing treatment. Bone broth is enriched with nurturing minerals complete with anti-inflammatory and soothing effect.
In terms of nutrient content, bone broth deploys the all important ingredients for skin health like Hyaluronic Acid, Glycosaminoglycans and ultimately, Collagen. With its rich meaty taste, it genuinely beefs up the tissues and boosts skin revival and radiance.
Berries. Berries, like tomatoes, are round fruits that feature freshness and succulence. It can be strawberries, blueberries or raspberries. What’s special about this group of foods is its antioxidant-rich content including flavonols and anthocyanins.
Remember, the darker black or darker blue in colour the berry is, the richer its antioxidant content. In fact, studies have shown the potential of berries to delay the onset of ageing, as well as decrease inflammation.
Citrus Fruits. Citrus fruits are a great, sustainable source of ascorbic acid. Vitamin C is a water-soluble vitamin, that’s filled with many health benefits. Its action in preventing the formation of nitrites mainly contributes to its protective function.
Adverse Impact of Alcohol. In addition to consuming these foods, it is also advised to avoid alcohol intake as much as possible. Did you know that alcohol speeds up the ageing process? Alcohol causes deterioration of the cellular membranes at a much faster rate. The hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis is activated by this substance, resulting in more secretion of glucocorticoids. In effect, stress hormone levels in the body increase and the ageing process speeds up. This phenomenon is also known as premature ageing. For this reason, always consume alcohol in relatively moderate amounts.
Turmeric has been used as a spice in curry for a very long time. More recently it is getting noted as arguably the most powerful herb on the planet because of its ability to fight against and possibly reverse disease. Turmeric and its healing properties have got the world so interested that there have been over 6000 peer-reviewed research articles published proving the benefits of Turmeric and Curcumin which is one of Turmeric's renowned healing compounds.
Out of the thousands of studies on Turmeric, one of the most interesting findings is that Turmeric when compared to pharmaceutical medications that the benefits are often equal. In fact, sometimes Turmeric has even been considered a better option than pharmaceutical medications. Although the list is a lot longer, today we will look at 10 examples of health conditions where Organic Turmeric can replace or be a better option than traditional pharmaceutical medications.
1. Management of Diabetes
When it comes to lowering your blood sugar and reversing insulin resistance Turmeric is possibly the best natural treatment. A study published by Biochemistry and Biophysical Research Communications in 2009 investigated how supplementing with Turmeric can help reverse Diabetes. The study found that Curcumin in Turmeric is 400 times more powerful than a common Diabetes drug (Metformin) in triggering AMPK to improve insulin sensitivity and help reverse Type 2 Diabetes. Curcumin also helps to reverse many issues related to decreased insulin sensitivity and hyperglycemia such as the loss of sight. The loss of sight caused by diabetes is because of damaged blood vessels but can be delayed by supplementing with Curcumin.
Unfortunately, there has only been a few studies that have been conducted on humans, there have been dozens of studies proving that Turmeric is very effective at treating depression symptoms in laboratory animals. Recently the journal Phytotherapy Research published a study of 60 participants with major depressive disorder (MDD). The group was split in three, one-third were treated with Curcumin, one-third were treated with Prozac and the last third were treated with a combination of the two. The study found Curcumin was as effective as Prozac in treating depression. The researchers stated their study is the “First clinical evidence that Curcumin may be used as an effective and safe therapy for treatment in patients with Mild Depression.”.
One of Turmeric’s biggest strengths is that it may be able to reverse and prevent diseases due to its anti-inflammatory properties. One study in the journal Oncogene compared several anti-inflammatory compounds and discovered Turmeric is much more effective than Ibuprofen and Aspirin. How amazing when inflammation is behind the majority of today's diseases’ for example cancer and high cholesterol. There are other great natural anti-inflammatory products on the market which can be used in conjunction with Turmeric such as Arnica which can be found in our Repair Tonic.
4. Cancer treatment
One of the most researched areas of Turmeric and Curcumin and diseases reversal is their potential to be anti-cancerous. Multiple studies on cancer cells have shown that Curcumin is anti-cancerous. Turmeric seems to have the ability to kill cancer cells and stop them from growing. Studies find Curcumin is most effective in fighting against skin cancer, breast cancer, bowel cancer and stomach cancer. An American study in 2007 found that Curcumin combined with chemotherapy killed more cancer cells than just chemotherapy alone. The American Cancer Society state that Curcumin interferes with cancer development, growth and spread. Researchers have also reported Turmeric’s ability to reduce tumour size and kill cancer cells.
Traditionally to slow/prevent blood clotting and treat conditions like vascular thrombosis doctors will prescribe Asprin, Warfarin, Naproxen, Ibuprofen and many other pharmaceuticals which can have unwanted side effects like excessive bleeding, haemorrhages’, headaches and more. Studies in the mid-80s found the Curcumin in Turmeric was actually a better option for treating vascular thrombosis. The great thing about Turmeric is that there is near no side effects unless it is taken in exceptionally excessive amounts.
6. Gastrointestinal treatments
Corticosteroids are often prescribed to people with digestive and stomach complaints, unfortunately, people become intolerant to medical interventions because their stomach flora is already damaged and corticosteroids can tear up the mucosal lining. Studies analysing Turmeric’s ability to manage IBS, Ulcerative Colitis and Crohn’s disease found many patients could stop taking corticosteroids because their conditions improved so much after taking Curcumin. This is great news for many people with these diseases as although corticosteroids reduce their pain symptoms they also damage their intestinal lining over time actually making the condition worse. Turmeric helps treat these diseases because it acts as an anti-inflammatory healing the gut and supporting the growth of good bacteria.
7. Arthritis management
A study was undertaken on 45 Rheumatoid Arthritis patients to compare the benefits of the Arthritis drug Diclofenac Sodium to Curcumin in Turmeric. The participants of the study were split into three groups, one-third took Curcumin treatment alone, one-third took Diclofenac Sodium alone and the last third took a combination of the two. The group that took Curcumin only showed the highest percentage of improvement, significantly better than the participants in the Diclofenac Sodium group. What is important to note here is that Curcumin is also a lot safer option than Diclofenac Sodium which puts people at risk of developing leaky gut and heart disease.
8. Cholesterol regulators
Heart disease is a huge problem in 2017 because more and more people are developing pre-diabetes (excessive blood sugar). Because of this a lot of diabetics and pre-diabetics are suffering from oxidative stress, this leads to damage inside the blood vessels. This damage is then patched up with cholesterol which leads to high levels of LDL cholesterol. Traditionally this cholesterol build up is treated with Statin. Statin does lower cholesterol levels but is known to harm the liver and kidneys as well as causing other deadly side effects. Statin also never addresses the root of the cholesterol build up, namely the oxidative stress caused by high blood sugar levels and inflammation. Studies have found that Curcumin was as good as or better than diabetes medications at lowering oxidative stress and inflammation.
Turmeric’s ability to manage pain is widely accepted in scientific communities. The European Journal of Pharmacology published an article which found Curcumin naturally switches on the opioid system in diabetic rats. This process is the bodies natural pain-relieving response which is typically manipulated by drugs. Another study looks at the range of pain conditions that can be treated by Turmeric. One pain condition looked at was severe burns. Normally severe burns are treated with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatories and harmful opioids. The U.S. Army Institute of Surgical Research suggests that Curcumin should be used to treat burns instead of these conventional medications because of its anti-inflammatory benefits.
Turmeric can benefit many conditions usually treated by corticosteroids such as Lupus, Rheumatoid arthritis, Psoriasis, Scleroderma and Chronic pain. Back in 1999, a study found that Curcumin has the ability to cure chronic inflammation of the eye. Chronic inflammation of the eye is often treated with steroids but today it is becoming more common for doctors to prescribe Curcumin instead. The important difference between managing disease with Turmeric instead of steroids is the lack of side effects. The list of side effects from steroids is massive some of these but far from limited to are Asthma, Cancer, Diabetes, Hypertension (high blood pressure) and Stunted growth in children.
My Final Word on Turmeric
If you have any of the diseases listed above you should consider the natural approach of treating them with Turmeric first before considering drugs with harsh side effects. For those who are not suffering from any of the diseases listed taking Turmeric daily will serve you well as a preventative measure. Turmeric is in my top 10 supplements people should be taking for their entire life! This is because inflammation is the catalyst of nearly all disease. An organic source of Turmeric is a must too, so it is not laced with contaminants which defeats taking it in the first place.
Looking for collagen and elastin providing skincare? Then, go for serums, lotions, creams or oils. Camellia oil, widely known for its high-performance natural skincare, promotes the synthesis of collagen and elastin.
Camellia oil activates a gene promoter in human skin cells called COL1A2, which starts the production of collagen type I. Camellia oil also prevents the breakdown of collagen by inhibiting matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-1, an enzyme that breaks down collagen. Upon topical application, collagen promotes moisture retention to keep skin smooth and soft, while reducing fine lines and wrinkles. Elastin restores skin elasticity to maintain its suppleness and flexibility. This age defying duo has been the secret to many skincare items.
Most recently, natural ingredients have been added to innovate collagen and elastin support. One example is Turmeric which delivers elastin and collagen protection and nourishment. What’s more, Turmeric promotes collagen absorption and prevents free radical damage. Then, Gotu kola provides antioxidant and UV protection and enhances collagen formation. Another is Alpha lipoic acid, the so-called universal antioxidant, is capable of recycling antioxidants and preventing skin damage.
Rosehip oil, a popular anti-ageing botanical ingredient, assists in the production of collagen and elastin, as well as cell regeneration. Additionally, Rosehip oil is a rich natural source of Vitamin C, Retinoic acid, Carotenoids and Essential Fatty Acids (EFAs) for locking in moisture and maintaining a healthy, radiant complexion.
